To cycle from John O’Groats to Land’s End was Rob’s final challenge to friend Abi, and me, his mum. 1114 miles, the wiggly way, the length of the country – how hard could that be?
16 good friends set off on 2nd May and, miraculously, 16 of us cycled together over the finishing line 16 days later at Land’s End. You’ll be relieved to hear that there were no serious incidents, and there was a chilled glass of champagne waiting for us – well Rob did promise he’d be “in every bubble”.
My route was stunning – though I say so myself! We utilised the Sustrans cycle paths, various trails, and canal and river paths. The hedgerows were beautiful, the weather was rich and varied (yes, we did get wet quite a lot) and the hills seemed never ending. The company was fabulous, the feeling of team spirit was incredible, and the sense of achievement was almost overwhelming. Some of us were moved to tears! Others of us preferred to discuss throwing their bikes into the sea!
Anyway, a fantastic achievement for all concerned. With the amazing support we received, a breathtaking £57,000 was raised for the Rob George Foundation. We all feel an immense sense of pride, and the Trustees promise to carefully make good use of every penny to help young people in need.
